The 24th annual MPAC Media Awards honors voices of courage and conscience as it has done from 1991. Among those standing up for justice this year are representatives from Camp X-RAY, Selma, and The Newburgh Sting. Director Peter Sattler takes the stage in accepting the award for his film focused on Guantanamo Bay and the people on both sides of the bars. Stephan James from Selma notes that “as storytellers, as creators, we strive to tell stories that impact people in a positive and affect positive change.” Selma has this impact and is deserving of being recognized by MPAC in this way. Lastly, David Heilbroner and Kate Davis note the problem of Islamophobia as seen in Newburgh. As David notes, it is very fitting to have The Newburgh Sting brought forward by the Muslim community in an effort to shine light on this issue.
